Petra De Winter is a young Dutch woman who loses her family in a tragic accident. Bram Broen is a young Norwegian man who is fighting in the Resistance during World War II. When their paths cross, they find solace in each other's company and fall deeply in love.
But their love is not to be. The war tears them apart, and Petra is forced to flee to England. Bram is captured and sent to a concentration camp. For years, they have no contact with each other, and both believe the other to be dead.
After the war, Petra builds a new life for herself in England. She marries and has a family, but she never forgets Bram. Bram, meanwhile, returns to Norway a broken man. He is haunted by the memories of the war and the loss of Petra.
In the 1980s, Petra and Bram are reunited. They are both elderly now, but their love for each other is as strong as ever. They spend their remaining years together, sharing their memories and finding solace in each other's company.
