Design and Construction

The RMS Queen Elizabeth was designed by John Brown & Company of Clydebank, Scotland. The ship was 1,031 feet long and weighed 83,673 gross tons. It had a capacity of 2,283 passengers and a crew of 1,150. The ship was equipped with the latest technology and amenities, including air conditioning, swimming pools, a cinema, and a ballroom.

Maiden Voyage

The RMS Queen Elizabeth was launched on September 27, 1938, and made its maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York City on March 3, 1940. The ship quickly became a popular destination for wealthy travelers and celebrities. It was known for its luxurious accommodations, fine dining, and impeccable service.

Wartime Service

With the outbreak of World War II, the RMS Queen Elizabeth was requisitioned by the British government and converted into a troop ship. It transported more than 800,000 troops across the Atlantic Ocean during the war. It also served as a hospital ship, carrying wounded soldiers back to Britain.

Post-War Career

Floating Hotel

In 1968, the RMS Queen Elizabeth was sold to the Hong Kong-based company World Leisure Corporation. The ship was converted into a floating hotel and moored in Port Everglades, Florida. It remained in operation as a hotel until 1975.
