Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a late-14th-century Middle English alliterative romance. It is one of the most famous and beloved Arthurian stories, and has been adapted into numerous films, television shows, and other works of art. This new verse translation by award-winning poet J.R.R. Tolkien scholar John Rateliff brings the poem to life for a new generation of readers.

Rateliff's translation is both faithful to the original text and highly readable. He uses a modern, accessible vocabulary and syntax, while still preserving the poem's alliterative structure and medieval flavor. The result is a translation that is both accurate and enjoyable to read.

The story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a classic tale of chivalry and adventure. Gawain, one of King Arthur's knights, is challenged by a mysterious Green Knight to a beheading game. Gawain accepts the challenge, and the Green Knight strikes off his head. However, instead of dying, Gawain's head speaks to him and tells him that he must find the Green Knight again in a year and a day to receive his final blow.

Gawain sets out on a quest to find the Green Knight, and along the way he encounters many challenges and adventures. He battles giants, rescues damsels in distress, and learns the true meaning of chivalry. In the end, he finds the Green Knight and receives his final blow, but not before learning a valuable lesson about the importance of honor and loyalty.

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a timeless classic that has entertained and inspired readers for centuries. Rateliff's new verse translation is a faithful and readable rendering of the original text that will appeal to both scholars and general readers alike.
