Origins and Contents

The Brothers Grimm began collecting fairy tales in 1806, at the suggestion of their friend, the Romantic writer Clemens Brentano. They collected tales from a variety of sources, including oral tradition, printed sources, and their own imaginations.

The first edition of the Collection of Scandinavian and North German Popular Tales and Traditions, published in 1812, contained 86 tales. The second edition, published in 1815, contained 156 tales. The final edition, published in 1857, contained 200 tales.

The tales in the Collection of Scandinavian and North German Popular Tales and Traditions are divided into three categories:

* Fairy tales: These tales are characterized by their use of magic and the supernatural. They often feature princes and princesses, dragons and witches, and other fantastical creatures. * Folk tales: These tales are more realistic than fairy tales, and often deal with the everyday lives of ordinary people. They may include stories about tricksters, fools, and wise men. * Legends: These tales are based on historical events or real people, but have been embellished with elements of folklore and myth. They may include stories about saints, heroes, and villains.

Significance

The Collection of Scandinavian and North German Popular Tales and Traditions has had a profound impact on the field of folklore and fairy tales. The tales have been used by scholars to study the history of folklore, the development of language, and the psychology of children. They have also been adapted into countless stage plays, films, and television shows.
